At 5:49 p.m. on Saturday, Yoon Seok-hyup walked out of the detention center, waved, shook his fist, and bowed deeply to his supporters. Supporters chanted Yoon’s name and waved South Korean and U.S. flags before Yoon returned to the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in a guarded vehicle.
Yoon Seok-hyup expressed his position through his legal team, thanking the Seoul Central District Court for its courage and determination in correcting the wrongdoing, while expressing his gratitude to his supporters and appealing to those who are on hunger strike due to his impeachment to stop.
Yoon Seok-yul was impeached by the National Assembly on Dec. 3 last year for suddenly issuing emergency martial law. The court ordered his arrest on January 15 this year, and he is currently in the trial stage at the Constitutional Court.
On the day of Yoon Seok-yul’s release, massive rallies in support and against the impeachment were held across Seoul.
The five major opposition parties and citizens in support of the impeachment held a pan-national rally at Anguk intersection in Seoul, where those in favor of the impeachment held placards, such as “End civil unrest and save democracy.
Citizens rallying in favor of impeachment
Citizen Kim Ho Jae, a supporter of impeachment According to our nation’s constitution, one of the president’s exclusive powers is to declare martial law, and martial law must be carried out within a strict range. I believe that if it goes beyond that scope, especially if it violates various constitutional institutions, such as the invasion of the Congress or the Election Commission, it is a clear constitutional violation. Therefore, the President’s use of martial law to carry out these acts, as the person who is supposed to guard the Constitution, is a violation and deserves to be impeached.
Beth Lynn, a citizen who supports impeachment I think it will definitely be impeached. From the time I was a presidential candidate, I thought that this person can’t be the president, and when he became the president, it was really bad. But through this opportunity, although the nation is facing a crisis, I think there is a possibility that something will change. On a positive note, the country may have a chance to get better.
Rallies against impeachment, on the other hand, were held around Gwanghwamun and Yeouido. People at the rallies waved South Korean and U.S. flags and called for opposition to the impeachment of Yoon Seok-yul.
Citizens against impeachment
Yoo Jin-joo, a citizen opposing impeachment Through this emergency martial law, nationals who have been asleep are beginning to wake up and realize what a dangerous threat this country is facing, and also realize that the forces that are following North Korea are destroying our country.
Lee Wan Yeol, a citizen who opposes impeachment The embassies of some countries in South Korea have made public statements asking not to interfere in South Korean politics. This has been reported through the news, showing that the involvement of outside forces does exist, and although there is no conclusive evidence, the situation cannot be ignored.
Yoon Seok-hyup, who was arrested on January 15 after being detained by the Criminal Investigation Division of Senior Public Officials on suspicion of staging civil unrest and was later indicted by the prosecution, was released after 52 days, and he will continue to be tried under non-custodial status in the future.
According to Donga Ilbo, the reason for the decision to release Yoon Seok-hyup was that the court found that the prosecution had overstayed its welcome. The court found that Yoon Seok-hyeol was indicted at the end of his detention period, as the Criminal Procedure Law stipulates that Yoon Seok-hyeol was arrested at around 10:33 a.m. on January 15 and was detained until 9:07 a.m. on January 26, but the prosecutor’s office filed the indictment on January 26 at around 6:52 p.m. The court also found that Yoon Seok-hyeol was released after the expiration of his detention period. Therefore, the court found that the prosecution had overstayed its case, while the prosecution argued that Yoon Seok-hyeol’s detention was limited to the period up to January 27th.
The Dong-A Ilbo noted that many in the Korean legal community believe that the revocation of the detention will not have much of an impact on the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial.
