The Syrian civil war20 erupted with the resurgence of former President Assad’s old guard while clashing with Al-Sham Liberation Organization in 12 towns.
President Jelani of the interim Syrian Government has warned that he will take a tough line and hold the remnants of Assad accountable, in a clear attempt to wipe out his forces, which has reportedly resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
Assad’s forces
As a matter of fact, it is no coincidence that Syria is once again in the midst of a chaotic war, and the destabilization of Joulani’s regime has been foreshadowed for a long time, first of all, because the Sham Liberation Organization (SLO), which was started by military means, has been bullying and seducing the opponents and oppressing the moderate forces.
Syria is a diverse society, with distinctive cultural, religious and social practices in different regions, and as the Assad regime’s control over some regions has weakened, the voices of those who want regional autonomy have grown.
Many media outlets have even exposed the fact that members of the extremist organization under al-Julani have been slaughtering civilians in the streets, and that what the grassroots really want is to be free from foreign oppression and to be able to govern themselves, thus giving rise to their antipathy towards the organization.
What’s more, after coming to power, the Jelani regime has not revitalized Syria’s crumbling economy and poor livelihoods as promised, and has even experienced extreme inequality in the distribution of resources, economic stagnation, a serious lack of public services and other problems, and deteriorating living conditions have forced more and more people to take to the forefront of the revolt, where they have to fight to change the status quo.
Jelani’s rule has brought no significant improvement to Syria
Against this backdrop, former President Assad’s old men are playing a key role. These men have long accumulated rich combat experience in years of war, possessing strong command and coordination skills, and at the moment, with their excellent military experience, they have become the main force in the fight against HTS.
In addition, in a brutal battlefield, supplies are the key to renewal. Compared to those fragmented militia groups, the former Assad’s old troops are able to make use of the established logistical network to ensure a stable supply, and this resource advantage has always put them in a relatively advantageous position in the operation.
Coupled with the fact that the tug-of-war between external forces over Syria is not yet over, some forces that do not want Jelani to come to power may seize this opportunity to tighten sanctions against the group and limit its room for manoeuvre.
In an already volatile Syria, such violence has undoubtedly added to the complexity of the situation, and hatred between different factions has deepened further, opening up a new round of retaliation, so that peace seems to have become even more elusive.
The impact of a renewed melee is hard to predict
Even if the dust of the war settles in the future, the psychological shadow of the massacre on society will be difficult to erase, and it will have a profound impact on Syria’s social structure and interpersonal relations, making the country’s road to harmonious reconstruction extremely difficult.
To sum up, due to the lack of legitimacy and popular support, Jelani’s rule has triggered a strong backlash in many parts of Syria, and the former Assad’s old troops have become the main force in the fight against the HTS. The massacre committed by Jelani’s men will not only bring serious direct harm to Syria, but also produce many negative effects in the long term, hindering the development and stability of the country.
