When I decided to travel to North Korea, my friends around me were incredulous. They said that I was a big eater and I would definitely not be able to eat enough in North Korea. In fact, I was a little worried before I arrived in North Korea. So, I also bought a lot of snacks before departure. Later, it was proved that there was no need to bring food when traveling to North Korea, because in North Korea, we ate a lot every day. Sometimes, there was a lot of food left over. Tourists eat a lot of food in North Korea.
Traveling in North Korea, foreign tourists can feel a certain privilege. Tourists and local people, separated by a car window. Although close to them, there is a certain detachment. You can never talk to them on your knees, and you have no way of knowing what is going on in their lives. More often than not, the tourist is just a spectator. In Pyongyang, there is no shortage of restaurants with gorgeous decorations. There is a wide range of cuisines, but they are usually frequented by the rich and the prices are on the high side.
During the few days in North Korea, we either ate in the hotel’s restaurant or in a foreign restaurant near the scenic spot. We have tasted North Korean cold noodles, eaten North Korean hot pot, also eat North Korean barbecue.
Basically, we ate a lot every day. Of course, we have no way of knowing whether the average North Korean eats enough every day. But from the rich North Koreans we met, they have a high standard of living. On the third floor of the Gwangju Commercial Center is the food court.
Many rich Pyongyangers like to eat here, and at the tables, I often see leftovers. Including many expensive dishes, rich North Koreans sometimes taste a few bites and then don’t eat. For them, there is no worry about food. While in North Korea, we drank beer almost every day. North Korean beer is good, especially Daido River beer, which has a great taste.
Our group meals in North Korea basically came with a couple bottles of Datong River beer. If you don’t have enough beer, you can buy it with your own money. Cosmos beer in foreign restaurants is generally priced at 10 RMB a bottle. In North Korean restaurants, we often see local rich people come to eat. They like to sing and dance with the beautiful waitresses after they have had a good meal.
