After Canada announced retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., specifically Ontario’s 25 tariffs on electricity exports to the U.S., Trump got angry and said he would declare a U.S. power emergency and double the tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel and threatened to permanently shut down Canada’s auto industry.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said The Canadian province of Ontario imposes a 25 tariff on electricity shipments to the U.S. I have directed the Secretary of Commerce to impose an additional 25 tariff on all steel and aluminum shipments from Canada to the U.S., up to 50 . He emphasized that the measure will take effect on Wednesday and accused Canada of having one of the highest tariffs in the world. He also predicted that a national power emergency would soon be designated in the threatened areas to deal with potential energy supply risks.

The decision is a push back against Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s electricity tariffs announced Monday. Ford announced Monday a 25 tariff on electricity sent from Canada to Michigan, New York and Minnesota in response to tariffs previously imposed by Trump. Ford warned that if the United States continues to escalate the situation, he’s prepared to completely cut off electricity supplies to Michigan, New York and Minnesota.
In his second post, Trump was very confused about the U.S. buying electricity from Canada. He said Why would our country allow another country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? Who makes these decisions? Why? Can you imagine Canada being so despicable as to use electricity that affects the lives of innocent people as a bargaining chip and a threat? They will pay such a huge economic price for this that it will go down in history for many years to come!

Trump has further warned that he will sharply increase import tariffs on U.S. cars on April 2 if Canada doesn’t roll back other harsh tariffs. He claimed this would permanently shut down Canada’s auto manufacturing industry. As an alternative, he offered to make all tariffs disappear completely if Canada becomes the 51st state of the United States. The U.S.-Canada tariff war has also added to market sentiment. On Monday, the Nasdaq Composite posted its biggest one-day drop since 2022.

In the face of the current state of the stock market, Trump wants the public to bear with him a little bit, and in an interview Tuesday morning he said We’re doing a great thing, bringing wealth back to America. There’s a transition period and it’s going to take a little bit of time. But I think it’s good for us. While acknowledging the risk of recession, he insisted that tariffs are a necessary transition. Now that Justin Trudeau has become Canada’s former prime minister, the new prime minister, Mark Carney, has vowed to challenge Trump, saying the U.S. is not Canada, and Canada will never be a part of the United States. Canadians are always ready for an attack. Trump, on the other hand, is ready for more, and according to ABC abc, the Trump administration is preparing to impose stricter entry restrictions on Canadians, including mandatory registration information for stays of 30 days or more, and starting April 11, Canadians will be required to have their fingerprints taken to enter the U.S., among other things. I wonder what everyone thinks? Feel free to leave a discussion in the comments section.
