The New York Times reported on March 10 that Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Ukraine would have to make territorial concessions in any future Russia-Ukraine peace deal. Rubio took a flight to Saudi Arabia that day to prepare for the U.S.-Ukraine talks on the 11th.
Rubio said that at the talks, the United States would like to hear what concessions Ukraine is willing to make to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We want to find out their position on this matter, and what they are willing to do to achieve peace.
The forum comes at a time when U.S.-Ukrainian relations are at their lowest point in the three years since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A few days ago, a heated argument erupted in front of the media between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, who visited the White House, and Zelensky left the White House early. The U.S. then cut off intelligence sharing with the Ukrainian government and also decided to suspend military assistance to Ukraine, CNN reported.
Earlier, Rubio U.S. National Security Adviser Waltz and U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Witkoff met with senior Russian officials in Saudi Arabia without Ukraine’s participation.
Rubio said the U.S.-Ukraine talks on the 11th are crucial and will determine whether the U.S. will resume intelligence sharing and military assistance to Ukraine.
Two U.S. officials previously said the U.S. is still sharing intelligence with Ukraine, but has reduced some of the supply of intelligence directly related to Russian military movements, CNN reported.
Rubio and Waltz will meet with Ukrainian Presidential Chief of Staff Yermak, Foreign Minister Serpiga and Defense Minister Umerov. A U.S. diplomat said the U.S. side will be In listening mode .
Rubio said both Russia and Ukraine have suffered tremendously in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and it is difficult for both sides to make concessions, but concessions are the only way to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
On March 6, Zelensky posted on the social media platform X that he hoped the talks would be meaningful .
Regarding the mineral agreement between Ukraine and the United States, Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready to sign the agreement in any convenient form.
