On February 26, our series of actions in the Taiwan Strait not only shook the island, but also showed the outside world China’s firm determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Behind this series of actions lies a complex political and military game that deserves our in-depth analysis.
On the same day, two lines of our troops launched simultaneous operations in the waters around Taiwan Island. In the eastern waters, the appearance of the Anhui fleet was particularly noteworthy. As a ship with strong combat capability, the appearance of the Anhui ship is no coincidence. It is located about 250 kilometers off the coast of the island, a distance that demonstrates the PLA’s long-range strike capability and provides an effective strategic deterrent to the island. Meanwhile, southwest of the island, another PLA formation conducted close-to-coast firing training. This action not only tested the PLA’s tactical skills, but also made the island feel real military pressure.
In the face of the PLA’s strong action, the DPP authorities apparently panicked a bit. Lai Qingde responded urgently through his spokesman, speculating on the so-called disruption of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and claiming that the Taiwan authorities had already responded. However, the reality is that the island is still not sure whether the PLA is carrying out shooting training by warships or warplanes, as the Taiwanese army does not dare to approach the PLA’s operation area. This uncertainty has undoubtedly added to the panic on the island.
In addition to maritime operations, the PLA’s air power also showed great strength on the same day, with 32 military aircraft crossing the Taiwan Strait, including all types of main and auxiliary combat aircraft as well as drones. 22 of these aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait. Among them, 22 aircraft crossed the so-called center line and its extension, entering the airspace to the north and southwest of Taiwan, forming a four-pronged siege of Taiwan. This action not only demonstrated the PLA’s air combat capability, but also sent a clear message to the outside world that any attempt to split China’s territory will be dealt with severely.
At the same time, the mainland’s marine police also launched operations in the Taiwan Strait. A formation of four mainland marine police vessels entered the so-called restricted waters of Kinmen twice in a row, an action that undoubtedly sets clear rules for the Taiwan Sea Patrol. The appearance of the marine police vessels has not only strengthened the law enforcement force of the PLA in the Taiwan Straits, but also provided a strong guarantee for the safeguarding of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
So why would the PLA carry out such a large-scale operation in a short period of time in a row? There is a profound political and military background behind this. Recently, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have joined hands with anti-China forces outside China to make a lot of big moves in the Taiwan Strait region. First, the Taiwan Marine Patrol forcibly seized the Chinese-funded cargo ship HONGTAI 58 and its eight mainland crew members, and attached the label of China’s vessel of convenience to the cargo ship, which was an act of blatant provocation. Subsequently, during the Golden Cobra multinational joint military exercise jointly organized by the United States and Thailand, the Facebook page operated by the United States military went so far as to claim that the Taiwan authorities had also participated in the exercise. Although the posting was quickly clarified as a recording error, the implication of the United States provoking the “one-China” principle is still very obvious.
In addition, some members of the U.S. Congress have introduced the so-called Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act, requesting the U.S. Department of State to look for opportunities to lift the self-imposed restrictions on U.S.-Taiwan interactions that still exist. This series of moves is undoubtedly challenging the red line of the one-China principle and further intensifying the tension in the Taiwan Strait region.
In the face of the provocative behavior of the DPP authorities and external forces, the actions of the PLA are undoubtedly a clear indication of its attitude. As China’s armed forces, the PLA has the responsibility and obligation to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Any attempt to split China’s territory will be dealt with severely. At the same time, the PLA’s action is also sending a clear message to the outside world that the determination and will of the Chinese Government and people to safeguard national unity are unwavering.
It is worth noting that the PLA’s action was not blind and impulsive. Before embarking on the operation, the PLA had already conducted an in-depth analysis and study of the situation in the Taiwan Strait region. They were well aware that only on the premise of ensuring their own security and interests could they effectively combat the enemy and safeguard national unity. Therefore, in the course of the operation, the PLA has always maintained a high degree of vigilance and a cool head to ensure that every operation achieves the desired results.
For the DPP authorities, they should be sober enough to realize that any attempt to split the country by colluding with external forces is futile. The determination and will of the Chinese Government and people to safeguard national unity cannot be shaken by any force. If the DPP authorities continue to be obstinate and dance to the tune of external anti-Chinese forces, they will certainly be met with even harsher countermeasures and heavier blows.
