Hello, I’m Lao Chen. Today let’s talk about the topic of sportsmanship.
What do you think of when you think of sportsmanship? Fair play, friendly exchanges, hard work, all of these are true. But when it comes to Korean sportsmanship, it’s a different story.
You know, the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea was a big deal. Korea made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Sounds great, right? But in reality, it made a lot of fans shake their heads.
When South Korea played Italy in the 18th final, the scene was simply unbearable to watch. The South Korean players were playing a lot of soccer and kicking people. But the referee Moreno was blind and pretended not to see it. In the end, South Korea won 2-1, but this victory is also too dishonorable.
Then in the 14th final against Spain, the Koreans had another good game. Spain scored two goals, which were blown away by referee Gandur. The Spanish players were so angry that they almost didn’t do anything on the spot. In the end, South Korea won the penalty shootout, but the victory came in a strange way.
The Korean team’s practice, not only in the soccer field. You have heard of badminton games can also play air conditioning, 2014 Incheon Asian Games, China and South Korea played badminton, the South Korean team actually played the downwind ball. They adjusted the air conditioning of the stadium so that the Chinese team always played against the wind. Lin Dan almost didn’t have to fight, this trick is also too bad.
And then there’s the game of Go. You guys think you should always play by the rules, right? I didn’t realize that the Korean team could even make a mess of it. In this year’s LG Cup World Go Championship final, Ke Jie faced Bian Xiang Yi. Ke Jie won the first game, but in the second game, he lost because he didn’t put his discs in the lid of the box twice. The rules were so strange that Ke Jie was confused.
Seeing this, don’t you think Korean sportsmanship is a bit different? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s bad. We have to understand what real sportsmanship should be.
The important thing in sports is fair competition and friendly communication. If you win, you should be happy, but if you lose, you should be graceful. Winning by strength is the real skill, playing smart is not a long-term solution. Look at Italy and Spain, by the South Korean team so much trouble, but inspired the fighting spirit, and then both won the championship, this is called strength!
Students, we learn sportsmanship, can not learn the wrong direction. The real sportsmanship is to respect the opponents, respect the rules, and use one’s own strength to win the game. Such a victory is truly something to be proud of.
